Q-Gears is an attempt to recreate Squaresoft’s 10 years old Final Fantasy VII game engine in a modern, cross platform (Linux yay!) and open source way. Have a look at this thread in the penny arcade forums to have a better insight of the Q-Gears effort.

If you’re geeky enough, check out their docs. Their knowledge of FF VII internals are absolutely mind blowing!

Still related: I can’t believe how much people are hacking the PC version of FF VII. Unofficial Windows XP patch, high resolution patch and most amazingly, the NPC reconstruction project. People sure love Final Fantasy VII.

  1. of course. It brings the revolution on RPG games and since then, FF Series turned into 3D and with better graphics, but FF VII is the pioneer on this.
