Gutsy Notes

18Nov07

I’ve upgraded both my PCs, at home and at the office, to Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). I have to say that my initial impression is, a bit rough on the edges. I’m always looking at the little things so my complaints might be on things that are less important to most of you.
First of all [...]

I can’t decide which one is better, the release of Ubuntu 7.10 or the announcement of Nokia’s N810 Internet Tablet (QWERTY FTW!). It’s a good day for Linux (and Gnome!) indeed :)

Yes people the Ubuntu 7.10 Beta (along with Kubuntu) is already out, that means the final release is less than a month away (Scheduled for October 18th). Quick highlights:

Dark chocolaty Brown background. A homage to Dapper Drake. It’ll be the first thing I change after installation along with the rest of the themes. Sorry, but [...]

Happy 10th Birthday to the Gnome Desktop Environment. No matter anyone say, you’re my favorite desktop environment.
I remember it was the clean and professional shots of 2.6 that made me fall in love with Gnome. And finally after installing Ubuntu 5.04 (Gnome 2.8) I finally made the switch, and never look back. Here’s a shot [...]

This is a simple guide to install and setup SmartSVN in Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn). You’ll need to have Java-6-Sun already installed first since it won’t run on GCJ. I don’t know if it’ll work on gcj or not.
Download SmartSVN

Please download the ‘Generic’ archive from the SmartSVN download page (currently the latest version is 3.0.1).

On To Feisty

08May07

I finally upgraded (actually I did a fresh install) both my home and office PCs to Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04) yesterday. Since I did a fresh install, I need to re-install most of the extra applications I frequently use. Thankfully I got the complete Ubuntu package repository on 4 DVDs, thanks to Ubuntu-ID. Instead of [...]

I found an article on how to obtain Vista’s TTF fonts via PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (free download). For Ubuntu/Debian (or any other Linux flavour), here are the steps:

Download Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 Viewer (approx 25 mb)
Install cabextract via Synaptic. Maybe you’ll need to have the universe repos available
For the CLI guys: sudo apt-get install cabextract
Run: cabextract [...]

Feisty is coming in less than a month now and the new features rocks (auto-codec install!). Here are some things that I would like to see in Gnome/Ubuntu (probably Feisty +1 if its not already in Feisty):

Auto-DHCP. Currently in Edgy when I plug in the network cable Ubuntu does not automatically refresh the IP address/DNS [...]

I just found out that my Murrina Y Blue theme breaks big time on OpenOffice.org. As you can see from the screenshot below, the menu padding looks perfect on Nautilus but hideous on OOo. The combo box in the OOo toolbar also looks ugly. The button is much larger compared to the text entry field. [...]

Yesterday I modified the Murrine Y GTK theme and here is what I got. Basically I make it more blue and less padding (but still generous, I love whitespace!) . I also remove the panel background since I don’t like it.
This is the first time I work on a Gtk Theme and I find it [...]
