Here is my 12+ Books for 2008 Progress Update: Within this month I’ve finished another two science fiction novels, bringing the total to six books within three months.
The first one is Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. A combination of Hindu gods, Buddhism, science fiction, and epic fantasy at the same time. The setting is an earth colony in the far future where through technology people have made themselves (nearly) immortal gods, taking the image of the Hindu pantheon. Lord of Light tells the story of Mahasamatman, or just Sam as he prefer it, the Buddha in his crusade against the gods. The overall theme and technology (reincarnation through main transfer) reminds me a bit of the the story of Xenogears.
The other one is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. The basic idea is about training talented children as future war commanders in preparation to the third alien invasion. Ender’s Game is a terrific read, I can hardly stop reading it. A true classic indeed! I can’t wait to read the following novel, Speaker for The Dead.
Lord of Light was awarded the 1968 Hugo Award for Best Novel and nominated for a Nebula Award. Ender’s Game is the winner of both the Hugo Award (1986) and Nebula Award (1985) for Best Novel.
